Chip Shop Chop Shop

Emilee and me in the paper world that ties London together in the Yankee In a Chip Shop video. It was another one-take fiasco, a la Salty Eyes, at least on the budget we were shooting- there was no affording double prints even, of the paper models we were destroying. And again, it worked out- by the skin on our eyeballs.

Admit it, growing up you were always jealous of the little girls who got to play with paper dolls. This was finally your chance to have some of your own...

Either way, it looks like it should be an interesting video.

Anyways, I cannot wait for this video, just like everyone else commenting here. I'm sure it will be a masterpiece.

Do I discern an underlying message in this latest addition to your blog? Something like “Buy our latest album-- hell, buy a copy for everyone you know and pass some to random strangers on the streets as well!” in an attempt at getting the message across before you run out of luck? It worked out before, it worked out this time-- but for how long can you rely on luck? And as much as I love how your music videos have a DIY and homemade touch I would of course never deny you double prints of paper models. Don’t worry, you’re not giving me a bad conscious and I do have the means to support the band. But if I promise to indeed buy an album or seven, could you promise to keep a certain amount of DIY-touch to the music videos? I’m very fond of it, you see.

(Ah, and yes, I’m very well aware that I may have completely misinterpreted everything.)

In any case; I’m very much looking forward to see the video.

I wonder if anybody on here ever feels like they're faking intellect just to keep up with Shawns light-years of thought.

I don't know really anybody on here...but sometimes what people say just seems...like they're trying to hard? Maybe.

Not that I mind. I'd much rather read faked ideals than read honest stupidity.

It just seemed a bit off.

maybe fans of the matches are just smarter than the rest of the world lol

June 11, 2008 6:51 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Perhaps it’s faked, perhaps it’s real. It’s essentially impossible to tell just from a little note left on a blog.

Maybe some just have too much time on their hands and overanalyze things? Or maybe they aren’t actually trying as hard as you think they are? They could even be doing it just for fun.

A bit off. Or perhaps a lot off, honestly. But why be bothered by it? If people want to try to seem as smart as Shawn or if, in fact, they are it’s pretty harmless, don’t you think? And (though I know I’m assuming myself) should people really be so quick in assuming that some of the things people say really is just attempts at seeming or showing that they are as clever as Shawn and nothing else? We don’t know them, as you say yourself, and therefore we don’t know if they’re genuine or not. If they’re trying too hard they’ll figure that out sooner or later and stop. But if it’s just who they are stopping would be more fake then going on the same way. Problem is we don’t know which one belongs to what category. That is, if we choose to make a problem out of this at all. (Not saying you are, of course =] )

Hmm. And now I think it seemed like I’m trying to be clever here myself. xD
Oh, well. x ]

I think it's cause people edit themselves. Like...alright. On a messageboard, you can just say whatever you want. Here seems more...public than a message board I guess. So they'll revise what they say, using a smarter sounding (haha, ironic) style of speech and a bigger vocabulary. Also because they're/we're all fans of the matches. People want to sound intelligent to be taken seriously by whoever reads these comments. Especially Shawn.

I know I can't speak for everyone, but I guess that's just how it seems. I don't think its faked and put on really (in most cases). Just...edited.

whose to say shawn isnt trying to sound more intelligent than he actually is? maybe big words are contagious and we all just caught the smart disease. maybe we just are all intelligent people. i dont know and most certainly the rest of us are in the dark as well

June 11, 2008 11:11 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think Allyson is right.

And like, it’s nothing wrong with editing your language. I mean, we do it all the time to make or writing stile fit a certain genre. (We’re taught to adjust and adapt or writing to fit specific genres in school, are we not? Or, well, at least I know that’s been the case for me and my fellow classmates throughout our school years.) And I would suppose some feel that this big-word-vocabulary and clever-sounding way of writing is this blog’s genre and therefore they adapt. And I don’t know but I’d think that the comment which spawned this discussion was more of an attempt at a half-joke? If you think about it, Shawn called the video shoot a “one-take fiasco” and mentioned the budget and how they couldn’t even afford double prints of paper models. He has talked about how music video budget is based on record sales before (at least I think I can recall something about it form one interview or another). So it does seem a bit like he’d, I don’t know, hope? that the album sells so that they have a bigger budget for future music videos. And so the comment would seem like it’s half joking and half serious? If it’s way off and this interpretation that Shawn would subtlety ask us to/wish we would buy the album is all wrong he’ll get a laugh if he reads it. And if it’s not completely off he might smile at it because someone , well, maybe not understands him but maybe kind of gets it and is supportive in a way, I guess you could say. So either way, it’s probably something to smile about?

And I do agree with the anonymous poster above as well; Shawn may very well try to sound smarter than he is. (How someone can actually sound smarter than they are is a bit of a mystery though.) I think it’s all about how we adapt our writing though. And as long as it’s a genre we are able to master it’s not faking and even when it is a genre we don’t master we will learn by trying.

Or maybe we have indeed all caught the smart disease.

You never know, right?

When the video comes out it will be well worth the wait. Hardwork, it shows. :D

I think people here are of equal intelligence, but Shawn has a way of writing something that leaves people so flabbergasted that it knocks them off their chairs. When they do get up and back to keyboards some of their intelligence gets left on the floor.

Trying to remember what intelligence they had, they comment. Only when they finish their comments they find the intelligence spilled into the carpet fibers. But it would have been too late. Comment posted.
Unless there are a few really lucky ones, and they find their intellegence before the comment is posted.

That's what happens to me a lot when I read Shawn's writing. Usually I'm so dumbfounded I can't comment.

Just to note, I don't mean any offense by this.

Don’t worry about it. I didn’t take offence. I did realize that my somewhat odd comment had the potential to start a discussion. I’ve seen them happen before when people have made similar kinds of comments, though perhaps staying on topic a bit more. I completely understand that it seems off and I’m sure I would have reacted in a similar way as you if it had been made by someone else-- even if I likely wouldn’t comment about it (no offence to you for doing so, of course).

And I think I'd like to blame the courses I’ve been taking in high school and in college for both the language and the actual content of that comment I made. You see, I’ve studied psychology for two years (taking two different classed) back in high school and recently attended a course in Swedish (my native language, by the way) in college and part of that course was about analyzing written text (and transcriptions, but that’s insignificant to this discussion) and see why it looked like it did and what was communicated – both directly and what was to be read between the lines – and to draw conclusions from that. So combine my interest in psychology with my fondness of analyzing the written word you’ll get weird comments like my previous one. Though, the comment was never meant to be taken too seriously. Unfortunately that did not communicate well. Should have thought of that I suppose.

But in any case, no hard feelings. = ]

But a band is only as great as what they do.

But in order for a band to become great,
they muct first be noticed.

And when noticed, they must know,
exactly what they came for.

It doesn't matter who they are noticed by.
