Breeding Womb

Alternative Press wants a photo of the Oxen studio where me and Emilee make art. Emilee is in Sweden, and I am sleeping in the lounge of an overbooked bus on warped tour. Between my backpack full of cables and hard drives, and a skype chat open on my Macbook, our studio is less tangible than it is conceptual, which leaves the trick of photographing it. With our photographer friend Greg Kicmal, 2 hotel rooms' supply of bedside lamps, an 80's National Geographic coffee-table book for inspiration, and a lot of skin, we began the photo/illustration this afternoon.
Here's the reference

and our sketch. There is little more amusing than nudity accompanied by shoes and socks.

fetussss
I'm guessing those are lights around those (corners?)
For some reason, if they are, it makes the sketch that much better. I just wish I knew why...

Little more amusing?
Perhaps nudity accompanied by
shoes, socks, AND a hat?
A silly hat, especially.

There is little more amusing than nudity accompanied by shoes and socks... except... and I say this rather hesitantly and vulgarly... you cupping your "nuts" in the drawing.

Assume the fetal position and work with what you've got... Nothing wrong with that, right?

By overbooked, does that mean your sleeping on a bench seat? I'd hope not, those get very uncomfortable after about...a day.

But, uncomfortableness makes for creativity and it shows. Breech, I see? Apprently breech babies are supposedly interesting ones...I was one. Ha.

I love the pointy shoes.

I have to agree with ashleypinkham's comment.

I am sitting here, glaring at my computer screen, hoping I can be brilliant like everyone else...
but I don't always get everything you say sometimes until someone else points it out.

that's okay, though.
they always sound nice.

I think I'd hate living on the road like that. I love my bed too much, and having a full table to stretch all my prisma markers and pencils and bristol paper all over.

Warped tour sounds like hell for the bands most of the time when it's really fun for everyone going to watch the shows.

I dunno, it's a simple sketch but I see a lot communicated in it. The spotlights all focused on the person, the tight and uncomfortable position. It's a nice representation of what's going on with you right now if taking a picture of your workspace is sort of hard.

I love the strained look on your face, and what I assume is the macbook floating outside the "womb" you're in.

Three days until I see you guys for the first time! Well, hopefully, at least, as my ride to Warped has bailed on me :\.

What's the "fire escape plan" for that one? Induce labor and hope that the next girl who walks by has enough knowledge to force you out through an annex of disproportionate size? Is oxygen well in the studio? An odd idea, but at the same time it must cut down on distractions.

You're quite right about the nudity/shoes/socks thing. And not only in regards to humans. Like if horses wore athletic socks with some nike shox, I'd be pretty amused by that. Or if you were walking down the street and saw mice wearing nothing but Vans slip ons with little skulls embroidered on.

(I'm not going to blame my insanity on tiredness)

I'll be excited to see what you come up with when I open my mailbox in a few months.

Alas, I feel dumb after reading such beautifully written blogs
Isnt it strange to think that blogs, of all things, can be beautifully written?

This is going to be so annoying but the myspace wont let me comment so I thought "here's a great place to share my thoughts".

Today was my Warped Tour date (pittsburgh...woopdedo) and I just wanted to say you made my less than great day into a hugely amazing day (i can say "hugely amazing" right?) just by your half hour set and signing. You were so nice and that just made my day the best yet probably.

thank you so so much
please come back soon!
i cant wait until February for the new album!

I'm going to mimic this right now.

My show was a long time ago, over a month ago actually, Calgary, Alberta.

The day SUCKED. I mean, I loved who I was with, but I missed a lot of bands I wanted to see, etc.

Actually, the day sucked is an incorrect statement. I mean to say, the day would have sucked if you weren't on the tour.

I swear to god, that set, first thing, best way I could imagine to start of my day. And probably the best set I've ever seen in my three years of going to warped tour. All of you guys were amazing people, and stayed until the last kid was happy. I just wanted to say thank you for that, as I never did.

Actually, I believe you met my friend Sara in Indy and Chicago, what you did meant a lot to her, really.

Anyway, I'll see you on sunday in Montreal, and again, just like it was for Calgary, you guys are the only reason that I'm looking forward to this whatsoever. I smile when I even think about it. Talk to you in 3 days man.

Hey, even people in nudist colonies wear shoes and sock. I swear; it's one of the more bizarre truths about the world.

Shawn, my grandmother says she loves your shoes. [shrug] I happen to agree.

When is Warped over? I really miss you guys and could use another Matches show near SF to look forward to.

i really love the shoes! so pointy & unique, which i noticed in a number of photos you've taken & posted on the warped site, or wherever it was that i saw them. is that a mirror under your sketched self's ass?? the thought of that is causing me to make quite a puzzled face that the little smiley emoticons can't even begin to portray...
alas, i want fun shoes like those. you should start your own clothing line or something.
