Meddle Fingers

Our tender composite metal shell juggles itself down a blemish pocked dirt road. We're turning the map vertical tonight and drippin our way down past the border, back into the big red 50. Canada was still there, some will be glad to hear.
Once upon a different me and a different you, people not so unlike us brought our band cookies and puffy painted shirts. You should see what those pastries have now become-- a velvet suitcoat! ties! scarves! Hats and glasses! Really, I'm constantly shocked at what sharp taste the gifts exhibit. Honestly, if I were to fall ill, any of a great number of you could stand in my place.
The sun over Warped Tour is a drain, and my head is spiraling dangerously toward it. Post me a comment to make this knot of a face grin, would someone?

You're lucky you even have the sun. Right now Austin, Texas has had rain for the past week or so. It's god awful...

Anyway, I really enjoy the blog. I was gone for a month and I was wondering what you were up to typing about because I find it so interesting and your words so poetic.

Hey Shawn-

It's Clint from Posterboy. We played a show earlier today at the Alameda Fair in Pleasanton and it was hotter than Hades. I know everytime I see you guys perform, I tell you that I amazed by how sweaty you get, but I'm pretty sure that I would've given you a run for your money today.

as a canadian myself, i am a little upset that you have left our great land. then again, i live out east, so it's not like you guys were anywhere near me in the first place.

i kind of wish you guys were doing a normal venue tour, warped is expensive and hot. plus, i will be legal drinking age this time around, and i was going to buy you a beer. psshht, guess not. ha

oh, random fact. don't find it creepy, cause it's really not: a drawing i drew of you helped get me into the BEST art school in canada. so, thanks... i guess.

Sounds like the weather is giving you a sucky time - I hate the sun as well. You know.. If you were in Australia right now you wouldn't be sweating at all.. Perhaps thats an incentive to come back? Soon?
On the other hand, you could probably just shed a few layers of clothing but Australia would be much more fun.
Eh, whatever. Keep your chin up. And have fun.

Let's see how can I make you grin? hmmmm.
Today I let my friend who sucks at driving, drive down the freeway in my car. She freaked out and I laughed so much I peed my pants. Did that help you smile?
Let me take you out to dinner at detroit warped tour?. Free dinner should make you smile.
What elseeee. When my friend (the above mentioned) listened to sunburn vs. the rhinovirus for the first time she actually blew her boogers on me. Okay that shouldn't make you laugh, that should gross you out.
Anddd I can't think of anything else. It makes me smile when you update.

Yet you know there is no answer fit
To satisfy, insure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not fergit
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to.

Im afraid I find it hard to sympathize with your unhappy relationship with the sun considering it’s been raining for what feels like forever on the east coast. I can feel pangs of jealousy stirring just hearing about it. Hah while I cant promise to make you smile, I can say the other day me and my friends sang a rousing impromptu chorus of jackslap cheer in the street. So rousing in fact it caused the neighbor to come out and chastise us for it. So rest assured that your fans are waking grouchy housewives up all over the country.

Theres something so calming about reading your words.

I love that you are so grateful for the presents people bring.
But, don't mistake sharp taste of any amount for being able to fill those shoes....or have those shoes nonetheless Haha.

I was thinking about that today. I can only imagine how tiring it came be on a tour like that, and it must get lonely.
Ironic, when you meet so many people that "love" you.
But, if you were to ever fall ill, make it back home first.
We miss you here.

ah, warped tour.. aka the 'listen to a bunch of music and have a bunch of strangers throw random flyers and shit at you all day' festival.

speaking of flyers (you like how i did that?), here's a Mitch Hedberg joke. he always made me laugh: "Whenever I walk people try to hand me out flyers. And when someone tries to hand me out a flyer, it's kinda like they're saying "Here, you throw this away."

I cannot guarantee to make you beam like the sun so does down South but posting a comment that is at least complimentary to compliment your most special blog is well worth anyone's time... Even if it is the 3:18am it is here in the now-warm Vancouver. I must admit though, it was hotter when you guys played! Your performance was sizzling hot, and it's always been that way, at least since that blessed time me and my sister discovered you those four years back. However, I don't doubt your live performance was ever any less... Only makes me wish I'd been graced by your presence sooner.

While I'm patiently waiting for my next chance to see you again, I can run around raving about how godly the Matches are to my friends who don't know what they're missing with full confidence in knowing that the sun is roasting you guys in your beautiful clothes as you perform your arms, brains, guitars, drums, and hearts out all over North America for the totally rad music that you so dearly love, play, and work for.

You probably don't need reminding... You've been in the industry long enough to know that this is the honourable trade of music, and in the end, when the tour's over, you know you'll have every right to be damn proud of yourselves. Not that you don't have that right already. I'm just trying to make the tour sound worth all the physical and mental energy it's costing you... I truly hope it is because it certainly is for those of us who come out to see you.

The fans can't thank you enough for what you do... And that's got to be pretty rewarding, even though if it does get annoying at the same time... Sorry about that, but your music is like sex to our ears, and pairing it with your live performance is just purely orgasmic.

Lots of love and support to you, Jon, Justin, Matt, and the rest your crew. Including Ben! (There is no way anyone can forget the Triangle Man.)

Physically, a good regiment for a heavy and hot face is stashing that little eye pillow that I gave to you in RhodeIsland, if you still have it, put it in the little ice box until it's cold. Once it's at a delictable temperature, just lay it on your face and allow it to take shape. Very refreshing. Good for tired eyes too, I might add. So the other day on the 4th of July I was at a friend's apartment. We were preparing a massive feast for the party of people coming to watch us shoot off fireworks while trying to keep all of our limbs intact. Now in order to cook, my friend has to wear a hat, so he pulls out this plastic white monstrosity w/ red and blue stripes, and two small American flags sticking out of its sides. I found the hat amusing, but to top it off I discovered a lovely Made in China sticker on the back of it...the irony made me smile, maybe it will work for you too.

ah the sun, the purest form of hell. Hold this though: "happiness is having your head incased in a block of ice."
Now that we have recovered from our 1st round of warped 2007. The "frat like energy" still rides in this house, no one went to bed last night except for Arthur because he was getting cranky about 5ish. Arthur (african grey) and I are in my office. He is playing godzilla, sitting on top the parakeets cage, ripping their toys up and tearing down their perches. he needs to step in the square. I just asked him what he thought he was doing. His reply was "go poopy". sigh. He dances to your music, dodging the peanuts I throw at him helps too. and you wonder how I come up with my creative ideas. I live with animals that talk back to me. I go to warp tour with one child and end up with 3 by the time I leave. I will bring ice cubes to LA in exchange for a chair to sit in while being lost. I am happy you are doing warp tour again this year. It has been such a pleasure to watch the band grow such a fantastic fan base. I, one of many someones, will fill out a comment box at your request. Like the models and celebrities of the world, you are bombarded with free gifts and clothes and miscellaneous items. The only difference is Gucci vs. Homemade. There is NO competition, you have gotten the best end of the deal. You are raised to the highest degree of stardom in the arms of your fans, while being lavished with presents that come with feeling and meaning. Not just some overpriced, designer-label frock. See, I bet P. Diddy's fans timidly approach him at concerts with $400 sunglasses as gifts, and curse themselves at such foolish spending when they get a autograph and an icy demeanor. I know that if I handed you one of my old socks with hand-painted art of The Matches, at the very least I would get a hug, lick, tickle, etc.
The Matches > P. Diddy. And not solely because of quality of gifts you receive. LOVE you guys. xoxoxox

KUDOS TO ALL THE AWESOME FANS!!! Oh and The Matches are alright. haha! If you ever need anyone to bring you down, you've got me! I try to be optomistic but I am a true pessimist. You were very quiet when I met you at bamboozle (like you would even remember me). Maybe you were just having a bad day, or just don't like me. Justin was nice though he drew a picture on my shoe, so whenever I look at my toes I see a work of art. You took a pretty awesome picture with me though, so I guess you couldn't have hated me that much. I still think all you guys are pretty awesome though, and are wonderful at what you do!

envisioning your head spiraling toward the sun, i couldn't help but think of icarus. (it must be hard to keep your head from turning into a hot air balloon with all the adoration and hand-made gifts that come your way!)

i'm picturing you as a giant crow with wax wings and velvet top-coat, making a beeline toward the stratosphere. crow, in czech, is Kafka--(an well-deserved bond with surrealism). so maybe you've transformed into a giant roach flying towards the sun...

anyway, it seems as though you guys have figured out a way to keep the ambition and absurdity fully charged without the hubris--a rare achievement. rock on!

no one could replace you. no one. i was just talking with a friend about the populus' apparent want and need to conform and fit into a certain category within our society. which just about kills me a little inside. yet it puts a smile on my face when i meet those few people who do not have that need and ideologically stand out from the rest. you are one of those few. thank you for that.

Well, Im glad canada is still here. because without the massive peice of land, i would have no home.

On another note, At 1:07 am, I am currently watching you on canadain tv. Ahh, we've come so far up here. And low and behold, It's the song that saved my life (As we discussed)!

But, If you ever seek canada again, do not fear. The only place we may go is to mingle with greenland. And even that would take quite a wile to accomplish.

Many thanks, and Lots of love -

I finally decided to see POTC3 and guess who Orlando Bloom morphed into at the end? Uh huh. You.
Seriously, have you seen it? You are the spitting image of Will Turner, though perhaps slightly more twisted.

I posted a previous comment, but it doesn't matter as long as I can say something nice. I posted it so you can view pictures inspired by you and your fellow matches. I am trying to make a present for you guys. Maybe it'll turn out okay.

With the help of the Matches Street Team and my best friend Britt, I have decided what my gift(s) will be for you at Warped Tour. You've asked for nerf arrows and you shall recieve. My biggest gift will be me! Don't stop reading...it's not creepy (unless you think walking band billboards are creepy and in that case I must rethink the entire Matches thing). I'm going to be wearing a Shirt that has Matches related things on it (and an homage to Kevin Lyman but thats beside the point). The shirt will say where you are playing and I'm bringing a Sharpie to write in when you are playing. I'm also having skickers made and possibly a hand bill or two. So if you happen to see a girl walking around, giving out the Matches stickers, and wearing all things Match-tastic (and who is accompanied by a girl who looks curiously like me, another girl wearing all black and a boy will curly black hair (also wearing all black)and who appear to be pretending they don't know me) that will be me! If I could get a tattoo it would be Matches related but alas I am not.

Smile Shawn. Remember...we all love you. You have impact on our lives and we wouldn't have it any other way (why would we be checking your blog for updates everyday if you didn't?)

My Warped Tickets have arrived and now I must go find pricing on having stickers made.

Much Platonic Love!
♥Katie (again)

Shawn--
I saw you guys at Warped on July 7. You were so awesome! It was nice to hear a familiar voice in not-so-familiar territory (it was my first time).

But, anyway, I really enjoy reading your blogs. The way your words just wind around themselves almost to the point of confusion, but not quite...it's great. I always have to smile when I see I've just read something so cleverly written. You're great.

Hey, smile! You're on Warped Tour and not working at a gas station like myself! Have a fantastic day and drinks lotsa water!

It sucked i couldn't find you, they were pretty with rainbow icing and sprinkles. But hey it was fun to watch five 13 yr olds start a food fight. Tho their mom was not so happy haha.

Boys are so fickle in their love. To be Cali-bred and to loathe the sun. Such feelings must be a product of a solar indulgent upbringing, and perhaps a few rays of treachery.

No complaints here, mind you. New York City welcomes you if you're looking for milder weather, and not so mild attitudes.

You'll be here soon enough.

Know that I'd be glad sheild you from the sun if only I were a large frame of UV-proof glass, but even better, I'm a fan. Made especially for providing comfort from the heat... even if it's just over the interwebs.

I'm entirely sure that 91 comments is enough to make even the most exhausted, sunburned Warped warrior smile. If only jsut fleetingly.

It's very nice to know that Canada does -in fact- still exist because if not, my entire preception of reality has been completely false and I reside somewhere the doesn't exist. I guess that would mean I also don't exist. But seeing as it does exist, I can't wait for August 11th. But with all the easy gift ideas taken up, I will be forced to break my uncreative streak and come up with something awesome.

I have a wonderfully uncreative solution for the intense heat that you may/may not want to hear. I think the 3+ layers of clothing on stage in 100+ degrees is just a bit much.

Happy Warping

I am beyond excited to be seeing you tommorow, dear shawn, though I am not looking forward to the 115 degree heat. You guys are and always will be worth it though and with some luck I will perhaps get to hang out with you guys again.

Sadly, no time to really make anything, though I did just bake snickerdoodle cookies to aid me in my boredom and energize me during my job search. I hope you are resting for tommorow- I know I am.

I usually feel like leaving a comment on your page is pointless (because I mean, look at the turn out), but if it will make you feel better...
I met you at the Roxy and asked you to sign my tanktop. You asked which one? The white or the red? I said whichever. You signed the white, which was, coincidently, my bra. I didn't have the heart to tell you.

Well, hope that made you smile.

oh Shawn, how I miss you. This comment is so late for I would of posted something the day you wrote this post. Well not today but JULY 5...is my birthday....I'm 25....and my endless one night stands with my keyboard are over...my life as we know it in Toronto is over...I have left one life behind and have started another in the warm inviting province of Nova Scotia...I'm Home...anyway...I hope you never fall ill of any kind for I would not want anyone to replace you...I have been suffering from a virus for the past 3 weeks which has left me to love my bed sheets and pillow for way to long but I think I'm on the mend and I now I have come back to life so don't fall ill...it's not so fun. I'm sad to miss you guys on Warp Tour this time around, but hopefully you will make it farther east someday...you know you want to come to Nova Scotia where all the pirates live in our little fishing villages...anyway I'm ranting...love you and miss you and have a great tour here in Canada...us crazy maple syrup fanatics love you. Think of me when your in Toronto. And of course I buy your band cookies they are so scrumptous.

I hope it will make you smile to hear that i think the matches are the single best band on the planet right now. Your creativity amazes me and your lyrics are fascinating. I'm terrible at spelling so forgive me if i show it but that is beside the point im scheduled to see you perform at the warped tour in 28 days and i have literally been counting down the entire summer. (sorry im an extremely random person so pardon me if i jump from topic to topic)I heard the matches first on Steven's Untitled Rock Show after hearing papercut skin i felt entitled to buy the album and i absolutly loved it! after that i went back and bought E. Von Dahl Killed the Locals which to my delight i loved just as much. Your lyrics are so well written and i love the plays on words such as ...a fist full of change and absolutly no sense...you are so clever and intelligent and that shows in everyone of your songs so if you are not smiling by now you must like being showered with compliments. I will watch you perform on August 15 in kansas city and I hope i will get to meet you in person.

your biggest fan(don't mind the cliche),
jessica lee woodward

p.s. Shawn Harris you are really f***ing hot! now you have to smile everyone loves hearing that and its the truth

p.p.s. if you ever need food or a place to stay or someone to talk to my door is always open not that you would be interested but w/e i might as well try my luck. also im bringing a shirt for u to sign when i go to the warped tour so hopefully i will meet you

also this comment is anonymous because i dont have an account o and one other thing i would absolutly die if you shouted something like hello jessica lee woodward onstage when i see you a warped your hint hint but dont feel obliged to because i dont want to be one of those annoying pushy fans but you know

<3 u shawn harris
<3 u "the matches"

But you guys still perform incredibly?
you guys are the best band to see live, and your slot yesterday at jax. was the best, so maybe heatstroke is a blessing not only to the performers but to the people of the crowd (the kids?), so that they're so fucked up they think you're playing well even if you're staggering.
I don't think that would be the case for me though.

prettyplease come back to jacksonville florida!

p.s. my dad wants to be a patron of the arts and take you guys out for dinner.
p.p.s i would love to be a tagalong
