Alternative Press Magazine in Conversation with the Wizard

Alternative Press Magazine in Conversation with (our manager) the Wizard:

AP: Shawn is an artist, is he also a photographer? We're looking for shutterbugs in bands to visually document the Warped tour for AP.
Wiz: Oh yea-- Shawn virtually lives behind a lens. He's been exhibited in the Ghetty and the Crocker.
AP: Really?!
Wiz: No, but he is quite accomplished.
AP: Great! We'd love to have him submit photos for our feature which will be both online and at the end of the summer, a feature in the magazine.
Wiz: Super.

The Wizard in Subsequent Conversation with Me:

Wiz: You're gonna be shooting for AP this summer.
Me: Shooting what?
Wiz: Photos.
Me: I'd better borrow a camera from someone.

My photos are updated on the AP site every 3 or 4 days. check it out and enjoy my attempt at faking photography skills.

In order to fake something well, all you need to do is learn a little and then apply it.

How to be a photographer in a minute or less...

Never ever ever use a backlight. You dont know how. I promise you, youre backround will be blown out and your subject will not stand out. Far too much contrast...No detail. (backlight is in other words dont light a picture where the light is behind the subject...)

Never photograph the subject in the center of the picture. That is unless there is something to offset the ballance. Having a person (for example) stand in front of some landmark of a place looks like a snapshot that belongs in a slideshow that close friends get roped into watching of the family's trip to yosemite. Its called a "snapshot" not a photograph. And there is nothing good about it.

The negative space in a photograph is sometimes just as important as the positive. Pay attention to the shapes created by the negaitive space. They can sometimes make or break a photograph.

Every picture must have some sort of focal point. Even if the picture is busy. You as the photographer need to tell the viewer where to rest his or her eye.

Leading lines can help establish the focal point or draw attention to what you, the photographer, want the focus of the picture to be.

People say that a photograph "captures a moment in time" but in reality a photograph is the perfect way for an artist to manipulate a moment in time.

You can show something real the way you want it to be seen.

So basically, point being, youre taking over some people's art form. Just thought the basics could help you do it justice.

Nice to see artistic outlets not just in one aspect. Goes to show that being an artist is not only through one media. Can't wait to see it grow through out the summer.....

I love the "aftermath" shots of Mountain View, especially since I made my friends wait around while I took some entirely similar shots before we left. Warped really is a war zone.

Photos are photos, they let people see forever what others saw for a split second. It doesn't have to be artistic, or particularly interesting.

And when you're so far away, any of your shared sight and memories is a good thing...

Now dammit, let me see those Mountain View photographs enlarged.
