Colin's Laptop in the Garden of Eden

Warped tour begins tomorrow. I have not yet met Colin of Circa Survive, but we are pitted in a wild free association game of scientific connect the dots ignited by his book of choice in the spin book club this month. The rest of my post will be a quote from Colin, because it is too good to keep private, or paraphrase.

"...another strange loose connection...it has been theorized that orginal sin spoken of in the bible is not the fornications that we assume and that the forbidden fruit ( or apple bitten by eve) actually represents knowledge of self and the use of technology. the tree of life. it represents the dna code in many circles... follow so far???
the theory goes further to say that the use of technology to gain knowledge of our origin is actually the original sin. as in it is what created us from the begining... puzzling.. id say... so we weren't supposed to invent computers and learn of the double helix (DNA)???? i decided to stop thinking about it and I shut the lid to my laptop.
AND THEN I SAW THE APPLE WITH A BITE TAKEN OUT OF IT ON THE LID.
ps. im not praising or unpraising ol jesus and crew i just thought it was creepy.

Haha, well, we all knew the Apple co. would take over the world one day. Or it's a sign.... taken from The Beatles. Ha.
Interesting theory though...

I think that his theory is very valid. I was having a similar conversation with on old friend(?) of mine who recently "found" God(I was unaware that he was missing). It's interesting from the perspective of someone like him. He informed me that we are all born sinners because Eve had to "go and eat that apple", and that the world would have been a better place otherwhise. When I questioned him on this, wondering if she in fact hadn't bitten that apple would we lack the knowledge we now have and would free will not exist he said yes. He said that life would be better that way. On a side note, he also condemned me and all that don't go to his church to hell. I'm not sure in the existance of God. I would like to believe in some shape of form that there is a higher power. My problem isn't with the Bible itself, but organized religion and their interpretation of the book in general.

Well that really is a bit freaky. It makes you think why Apple would use such a symbol.

God created man before evil entered the earth. Once evil entered the earth they had the choice of free will. Before that there was nothing for them to choose anyway. Satan brought evil when he left heaven and created hell. After that happened, I mean that is when free will began I guess, and even if Eve had not eaten the apple someone else would have done it eventually. Before the devil, everything was good and perfect.
Oh and I hate people who say they believe in God so much but them discriminate against other people and tell them that they are worthless if they do not share the same beliefs as them. None of us know if God truly exists, its all about FAITH! For all we know He may not even be real. I think we all at least hope that there is something in the after life that is far better than this world.
Gosh what did I just ramble on about?

In response to your quotation, I'm going to comment with a quote myself from the novel I'm currently reading:

'Your God person puts an apple tree in the middle of a garden and says "Do what you like guys, oh, but don't eat the apple." Surprise surprise, they eat it and he leaps out from behind a bush shouting "Gotcha". It wouldn't have made any difference if they hadn't eaten it.'

'Why not?'

'Because if you're dealing with someone who has the sort of mentality which likes leaving hats on the pavement with bricks under them you know perfectly well they won't give up. They'll get you in the end.'

The post detailing how evil and free will came into play in God's world (The post which began with "God created man before evil entered the earth.") got me thinking... from what I understand, if we are to submit to God's will and leave our sinful nature behind, free will is completely unnecessary. God has outlined the "right choices" for us in his word. According to Christian theology, the ultimate act of love towards Jesus is our decision to follow his commandments.
From this simple idea, would it be unreasonable to suggest that free will acts as some sort of stumbling block in one's "walk with Christ"? And thus, might free will be seen as ultimately sinful in its self?
All my life, I have been taught that God has bestowed the GIFT of free will upon man. Consider that: God has allowed us access to free will, the very idea which enables us to separate ourselves from his love and subject our own mortal souls to eternal damnation, and we call it a blessing.
Frightening.
I don’t mean to attack anyone’s religious beliefs by any means, but I have recently noticed a few similar, disturbing contradictions in my own faith, one that I, at one time, so arrogantly assumed, was rock steady.

Anywho, I hope warped tour makes ‘07 a summer the Matches will never forget (how awkward was that transition?)!

Free will is still necessary if you want to completely turn to God because at any point in time you can decide to turn away from Him if you want to. Wow this is almost as bad as trying to explain the Holy Trinity!!! Now that can get confusing! The best explanation I heard about that is, "The Holy Trinity is a mystery. Mysteries cannot be explained." The end.

"Free will is still necessary if you want to completely turn to God because at any point in time you can decide to turn away from Him if you want to."
Hmmm... Christianity teaches that being "saved" is a one time thing, and that the holy spirit will never allow you to turn away, Jesus has you in his hand and will never allow you to be snatched, all that jazz.
This makes it seem as if being "saved" essentially transcends free will. Jesus also mentions that the father gave him his followers and now they are his and will always be his (I'm not going to quote the bible because its far too easy to manipulate to your own liking and that's just icky).
So... is being saved predetermined, as the bible hints? If so, then does free will have any meaning at all?
...
hmmm....
