High Browse

The jacket of my favorite book of short stories reads:

Dear Shawn,
From a fan of YOUR "the Barber's Unhappiness" Write more songs based on my stories.
George Saunders

(!!!)
I am not composed. Our music is on the ipod of the best short story writer of our era! The best short story writer of our era has an ipod! My ipod broke, but were it still in order, I would trade it without hesitation for my signed copy of Pastoralia.

I took the time to make a blogger account just for you. It feels awkward to me to get comments from people without being able to put a face to a name.

I would be estatic if the reverse happened to me- if a musician told me they were a fan of my work.

You should be proud.

What an amazing feeling to have him acknowledge your work.

Speaking of books. I read Jesus' Son. A short read, but a good one. Are there any more you would suggest?

I'm pretty sure the book actually reads "From a fan of YOUR 'The Barber's Unhappiness' write more songs based on my stories."

But it's not like I carried that thing around for a month before giving it to you...

So cute that you're a blogger now. So much potential for obnoxious comments involving words like "stalwarted" and "foid."

Hahaha "I am not composed." I love that.

I've been meaning to get that since I heard "The Barber's Unhappiness" was based on one of the stories, and now it's on hold for me today.
So I'm sure he can thank you for a few book sales.
You sound so happy.

Congratulations on that signing though. That's really cool. I think I'll check out some of his work, especially if "The Barber's Unhappiness" is based on one of his stories. I love that song.

The Braindead Megaphone
by George Saunders
Release date Sept 4, 2007

Book Description
The breakout book from "the funniest writer in America"-not to mention an official Genius-a trade paperback original and his first nonfiction collection ever.
George Saunders's first foray into nonfiction is comprised of essays on literature, travel, and politics. At the core of this unique collection are Saunders's travel essays based on his trips to seek out the mysteries of the "Buddha Boy" of Nepal; to attempt to indulge in the extravagant pleasures of Dubai; and to join the exploits of the minutemen at the Mexican border. Saunders expertly navigates the works of Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut, and Esther Forbes, and leads the reader across the rocky political landscape of modern America. Emblazoned with his trademark wit and singular vision, Saunders's endeavor into the art of the essay is testament to his exceptional range and ability as a writer and thinker.
